HUNT FIRE
Wednesday, August 11, 2004

Higher temperature and lower humidity substantially increased the potential for high fire activity evident yesterday, Tuesday, August 10, 2004 when the Hunt Fire broke out at 5:30 p.m. as a result of the use of a grinder in dry grass. The fire started on Hunt Road at Salt Springs Valley Road, north of Copperopolis, has consumed 400 acres. Fire containment is at 10% and firefighter fatigue is a primary concern due to the high fire activity statewide. Fire Officials advise the public to not use mechanical equipment after 10 am near dry vegetation. No mowers, no grinders, no welders, no chain saws, no weed trimmers, no tractors, no mechanical equipment that would risk a potential fire hazard.

FIRE CONDITIONS ARE AT CRITICAL LEVELS!

Firefighters are working in steep, inaccessible terrain. Last night, a privately owned water tender rolled over while providing support to fire crews. The vehicle sustained $25,000.00 damage, however no one was injured.

Northern California Power Authority transmission lines were de-energized to protect the lines and for firefighter safety.

Road Closures: Pool Station Road is closed at Circle XX. Hunt Road is closed at Highway 4. Motorists are advised to be aware of the movement of fire equipment along the Highway 4 corridor.

There are currently 513 people committed to this incident. Equipment includes:

Engines: 52
Crews: 21
Dozers: 11
Water Tenders : 7
Air Tankers: 2
Helicopters: 5
