TIME: 1630WATER SUPPLY AND CONSERVATION ISSUES The Darby Fire, which started ½ mile east of the Stanislaus powerhouse, destroyed the flume that provides water to the communities of Murphys, Vallecito, Douglas Flat, Carson Hill, Six Mile Village, Frogtown and the City of Angels. The Water Incident Management Team, comprised of representatives from the Calaveras County Office of Emergency Services, the City of Angels, the Union Public Utility District (UPUD), and the Calaveras County Water District (CCWD), are in the process of implementing several short term solutions to immediately increase the available water supply for domestic use.
"By rerouting the existing water supply from CCWD, it will increase the available domestic water supply," said Debbie Ponte, Mayor, City of Angels. "The supplemental water will be processed by UPUD at the Murphys Treatment Plant," Ponte added. For more information contact: Dick Bradford, UPUD, at (209) 728-3651."Secondly, CCWD is establishing two locations, one in the Ebbetts Pass area and one in the Valley Springs area, where commercial, agricultural and industrial users may access water. Users with tanker trucks of 1000 gallons or greater may fill their tanks with potable water," said Debbie Ponte. Interested commercial, agricultural and industrial users should contact CCWD at 209-754-3543 for more information.
"Thanks to excellent conservation efforts made by residents, there has been a 50% reduction in water usage over the past several days which improves the water supply in the short term," Ponte said. "However, residents must continue extreme conservation measures in order to avoid future water rationing," she stressed.
The Water Incident Management Team is monitoring and reassessing the water supply on a daily basis while also working on long term engineering and construction solutions to the flume repair. Residents are urged to continue their great work on conservation efforts.
