San Andreas - The Darby Fire has now consumed over 11,135 acres and is 66% contained. The public is invited to attend a community meeting to discuss the status of the Darby Fire tomorrow, September 12, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Hazel Fischer Elementary School in the gymnasium. Representatives from CA Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), U.S. Forest Service, Vallecito Union School District and Calaveras County Supervisor Merita Callaway will be available to answer questions. Vallecito Union School District
will remain closed tomorrow September 12, 2001. This includes
Albert Michelson, Avery Middle School and Hazel Fischer Elementary
School. Student and faculty safety remains the number one priority.
School closures will be reevaluated on a daily basis. Mandatory evacuations remain in effect for Love Creek Road and the Doud's Landing area. Advisory evacuation notices have been posted to residents in the Blue Lake Springs Subdivision from Hwy. 4 and Moran Road south to Murphys Drive. The advisory notice is a precautionary measure to prepare residents in case evacuations become necessary. Residents given an advisory notice by the Sheriff's Office should prepare their belongings and pack medications, prescriptions, the name of your physicians and any special equipment needed for several days. Persons with special transportation needs should call the Calaveras Sheriff's Office in Arnold at 795-0473. Have valuable papers, such as deeds, mortgage papers, insurance documents, birth certificates, and photographs packed in the car. Residents traveling on the Hwy. 4 corridor should use extreme caution while driving. Do not stop in the middle of the road to look at the fire. Calaveras Works and Human Services has reopened the evacuation center at the Albert Michelson Elementary School off Highway 4 on Pennsylvania Gulch Road in Murphys. If you need assistance with animal transport, call Animal Control at 754-6509. Love Creek Road at Moran Road is closed. Other roads may be restricted as needed. For information regarding road restrictions or closures, call the CHP San Andreas Office from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM at 754-3541 and at their Stockton Dispatch center after 5:00 PM at 943-8600.
